hey Spud,
sorry for the late reply, i was away in europe and took a nice break away from computers.
i usually have the A and E strings at about 9mm (or 0.35 inches?)
i feel pretty comfortable with that height, give or take 1 mm higher or lower.

buzzing with roto can sometimes come the string itself, i had some badly made (new) ones. When i put new strings on, i run a finger along the strings to see if there are any bumps on them, especially on the A and E..

thanks, Alex !
from what i could see on people’s basses and technics, the guys playing psychobilly on steel strings for exemple seem to love a really low action compared to the guys using gut strings who prefer the high action.
steel strings sound will go through without too much power while gut require more pulling.
it’s also due to your slap technic, if you use more of your wrist/hand move for slapping, you can use a lower height, if you use more of your arm, higher would seem easier.

i find myself in the middle, can’t play on too high or too low. don’t know the US measurement for it but it’s about 1.2cm, then i’m happy. it works with my technic, i like “grabbing” the string, not just touch it. But with a too-high action, i cannot make my fast drag triplets sound good or clear enough.
of course, it’s a generalisation, some people can play with the opposite set-up but mostly, that’s what i’ve seen.

it’s 8.30am so i don’t know if i fully answered your question 😉
let me know if i should elaborate more.
Hey, that’s great :cheer: Where in Norway is your Dad from?

I haven’t really been to Sweden, except when travelling through by train to get to the Roskilde Festival in Denmark ages ago. But I’m planning on going there (in a couple of years time) once I get the money to buy myself a Slap King 😆

The music scene in Norway is OK I guess, but there isn’t any real psychobilly around as far as I know. Not much slap bass going on either. What’s it like in Sweden?
i know of only 1 Norwegian psycho band from the 90’s called Rejects.
great band, they released a single and an 8 track mini-lp on a local label.
