Hi,
Just traveled from Calgary to SF with my bass on Delta. I had a good experience (documented my tips here: http://triplefireplug.blogspot.com/2009/08/airline-travel-with-your-bass.html).
Has anyone else had experience with this? I’m traveling to NY in November. Any suggestions on airlines? Does anyone know if the Delta/Northwest merger will affects their over-sized baggage policy?
So far Delta and SAS have been my two worst experiences flying basses. I booked flights on Northwest.com to Ireland, and the flights were with delta. Northwest is Easy. 150 bucks each way to europe. we show up to the Delta desk. First the attendant said I couldn’t fly the bass, I’d have to send it as cargo. after about 45 minutes of arguing and appealing to supervisor, after supervisor, I finally got it checked. For 325 fucking dollars. interestingly enough the return flight was only 100 euros.
It seems like alot of airline counter clerks will just charge you an arbitrary amount for your instrument. Whenever I fly I always research the airlines oversized policy, print it out and bring it with me so there is no argument.
when flying in the US I always use southwest. 50 bucks each way, no problem.
